A ceiling fan can do wonders for your home—keeping you cool, enhancing air circulation, and even adding a touch of style. But picking the right one isn’t as simple as grabbing the first design that catches your eye. 

From motor types to blade sizes and placement, turns out there’s more than meets the eye when finding a fan that works effectively and complements your space.

According to Miguel Araya, product development manager at Universal Fans, informed decisions were the real key to shopping for a fan. 

“Ceiling fans are among the most practical and cost-effective ways to enhance comfort at home. It is crucial to know what to look for before making a purchase, particularly when buying online,” he said. 

“A little research and knowledge go a long way in selecting a fan that not only looks great but also performs effectively.”

To help you get it right, experts at Fanco have outlined the five most common mistakes people make when choosing a ceiling fan—and how you can avoid them.

Choosing the wrong size for your room

When it comes to fans, size matters (Fanco)

Despite what your wife might say, size does matter – at least when it comes to fans. But bigger isn’t always better, and smaller isn’t necessarily more efficient. The size of your fan should be proportional to the room to ensure optimal airflow.

  • For small rooms (around 3×3 metres), such as bedrooms or studies, a 52-inch fan works best.
  • Medium rooms (up to 6×6 metres), like living rooms, benefit from a 56-inch or 60-inch fan.
  • Large, open-plan spaces (8×8 metres or more) need 70-inch fans or larger for effective air circulation.

If a fan is too small, it won’t move enough air, leaving the room feeling stuffy. If it’s too big for the space, it can wobble or create too much airflow, making it uncomfortable rather than refreshing.

Overlooking motor type

The motor is the heart of your ceiling fan, impacting its performance, energy efficiency, and noise level. There are two main types:

  • AC motors (Alternating Current): Reliable and budget-friendly, AC motors are common in many homes. They typically use around 90W of power, operate via a wall switch (though some models have remote options), and come with three-speed settings. Modern AC fans are designed for quiet operation, making them a great choice for bedrooms and living spaces.
  • DC motors (Direct Current): The newer, more energy-efficient option, DC motors use even less power and offer five or more speed settings for better control. They are often remote-operated and ideal for high-use areas like living rooms and alfresco spaces. While they cost more upfront, their energy savings over time make them a worthwhile investment.

Both AC and DC fans perform well—it just depends on your budget, control preferences, and energy-saving goals.

Poor placement can reduce airflow

Even the best ceiling fan won’t work properly if it’s installed in the wrong spot. Fans that are too close to walls can create pressure imbalances, reducing their efficiency. Those that hang too low can be hazardous, especially in high-traffic areas.

To ensure optimal performance, Fanco suggests:

  • Mount fans at least 2.1 metres above the floor (use an extension rod for ceilings higher than 2.7 metres).
  • Keep 30-50 centimetres of clearance between the blades and walls or sloped ceilings.
  • Install fans centrally in a room or directly above seating areas for even airflow distribution.

This is particularly important in open-plan homes, where air needs to circulate between multiple spaces.

Prioritising style over functionality

Ceiling fans have evolved from basic appliances to stylish home décor elements, but functionality should never take a back seat to design.

Blade pitch matters: Fans with a 12-15 degree blade angle generate strong airflow, while flatter blades (though sleek) won’t move air as effectively.

Material choice is key:

  • Timber blades (FSC® Certified) provide a warm, natural aesthetic and pair beautifully with wood flooring.
  • ABS plastic blades are moisture-resistant, making them ideal for outdoor areas or spaces with high humidity.

Lighting integration: Many modern fans now come with dimmable LED lights featuring CCT (Colour changeable technology), allowing you to adjust the brightness and warmth to suit different moods and settings.

For added convenience, look for smart features like remote controls or smartphone connectivity, which make adjusting fan speed and lighting effortless.

Not considering energy efficiency

Ceiling fans are one of the most cost-effective cooling solutions for Australian homes, but their efficiency depends on choosing the right one. Energy-efficient models with DC motors and LED lighting consume less electricity, saving money on power bills in the long run.

Additionally, using your ceiling fan with an air conditioner can help distribute cool air more effectively, reducing the need for high AC settings and lowering overall energy consumption.
