Move over basic Christmas décor! Bunnings has dropped a DIY hack so simple, even the most craft-challenged among us can nail it.

The beloved hardware store has sent holiday enthusiasts into a frenzy after sharing a tutorial on Instagram for creating giant candy canes using a budget-friendly item starting at just $2.35.

“Who knew PVC pipes and red cloth tape could make such festive giant candy canes?” Bunnings wrote alongside the now-viral video.

The straightforward instructions and adorable results have fans rushing to their nearest store for supplies.

Create your own candy canes

Want to add these statement candy canes to your festive décor? Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Acetone cleaning solvent and a cloth (to clean the pipes)
  • 100mm 80° PVC female and female plain bend
  • 100mm 80° PVC male and female plain bend
  • 100mm x 1m PVC pipe
  • Red cloth tape
  • Scissors

While Bunnings suggests a drill and some additional tools if you plan to secure the candy canes with a base, they also reassure you that skipping this step is totally fine. Just pop the finished candy cane into your garden or a plant pot—it’ll still look amazing.

The tutorial explains it all:

  • Use acetone to wipe away any labels or marks on the PVC pipes.
  • Wrap the red cloth tape diagonally around the pipe to mimic a candy cane’s striped design.
  • Attach the two pipe bends to form the signature hook shape.
  • Connect the candy cane hook to the one-meter PVC pipe and continue taping for a seamless look.

Want to go the extra mile?

If you’re ready to step up your game and use a base, here’s what you’ll need:

  • Clamps
  • Drill with a 5mm bit
  • 100mm PVC floor flange
  • 5mm tent pegs

Drilling holes in the flange’s outer ring will allow you to secure the candy cane firmly to the ground. Just slot the pipe into the hub, peg it down, and voilà! Your giant candy cane will stand tall against any festive backdrop.

A DIY festive favourite

The response to Bunnings’ candy cane tutorial has been as sweet as the treat itself, with one Instagram user joking that “Husbands everywhere are being shown this video”.

Others were equally thrilled.

“I need to do this, how adorable!” wrote one user

“So clever and easy to do,” someone else chimed in.

One crafty fan shared that they’ve been making these candy canes for years but take it a step further by adding red and white fairy lights for extra holiday magic.

So, what are you waiting for? Time to hit Bunnings and join in on the festive fun!
