The best and brightest in building and construction stepped off-site and headed to Hobart last week to celebrate the 2024 National Excellence in Building and Construction Awards.

Hosted by Master Builders Australia, the annual three-day event saw some of the industry’s best win awards in over 50 categories for outstanding projects in residential, commercial and civil construction that garnered them acclaim.

With entrants facing some stiff competition going into this year’s tight judging rounds, the group’s CEO Denita Wawn said 2024’s winners should be proud of their “talent, innovation, dedication and excellence”.

“Every project and individual recognised over the weekend is a testament to the resilience and leadership that defines our industry,” she said.

“Master Builders members continue to demonstrate their ability to deliver high-quality projects that set benchmarks for innovation and excellence in the industry.

“These awards celebrate not just the structures and projects but the people behind them – builders, subcontractors, and their teams who go above and beyond to transform communities.”

But, while everyone who stepped onto the stage went home a winner, only four top tradies could take home one of the coveted major awards on the ceremony’s closing night – the National Apprentice of the Year, National Young Builder of the Year, National Residential Master Builder of the Year and the impressive National Construction Master Builder of the Year.

Billbergia (NSW) Pty Ltd took out the top spot, winning the National Construction Master Builder of the Year Award for their work on 88 Walker in North Sydney.

The 50-level mixed-use 88 Walker is North Sydney’s tallest tower (standing at 180 meters) and features an iconic signature cantilever, partly suspended over the heritage-listed Firehouse Hotel.

Targeting a 5-star Greenstar rating, the tower also features a double-height lobby, pedestrian pathways, and extensive facilities, making it a landmark development in North Sydney’s commercial core.

Havendeen took out the residential Master Builder of the Year award for their impressive PALA home project in Queensland.

Designed by Studio Snell, the organisation applauded PALA’s unique canal-front residence design, with “meticulous planning and craftsmanship” being essential to making the three post-tensioned concrete slabs a reality.

The end result is a design that “blends natural elements with bold structural details” to create “exceptional living spaces” that will stand the test of time.

National Young Builder of the Year

South Australian Matt Cates was awarded National Young Builder of the Year for his leadership in craftsmanship, safety and innovation.

As founder of 4Life Constructions, Master Builders said Matt’s commitment to excellence shined through each custom home, where his meticulous quality control and hands-on approach ensure projects exceed expectations without compromise.

His business was also a key pioneer in using a QR code system for site inductions, making protocols clear and accessible for everyone.

“A proud Master Builder, Matt is also committed to giving back, from mentoring young talent to sharing industry insights – setting a new standard and inspiring the future of construction,” wrote the organisation.

National Apprentice of the Year

Tyler Love from New South Wales was awarded National Apprentice of the Year for his exceptional dedication, leadership and skill as a carpentry apprentice.

Reportedly known for his outstanding work ethic and commitment to quality, his employer said Tyler sets high standards on every project while also prioritising safety.

At just 22, Master Builders said Tyler’s maturity, initiative and commitment truly set him apart, making him a well-deserving recipient of the Master Builders Australia Apprentice of the Year Award.

“Tyler’s leadership shines as he guides younger apprentices, showcasing his problem-solving skills and readiness to step up in challenging situations,” wrote the group.
