From blocked pipes to blown lights, owning a home can often feel like you’ve taken up a second career as a full-time maintenance manager for a giant block of flats.
Calling out tradies to fix the never-ending flow of household upkeep problems can be a headache in itself, but having them come back to fix the same or multiple issues over and over again can make any homeowner feel like selling up.
In fact according to RACV data from their Emergency Home Assist service, nearly one-in-five callouts are for blocked pipes and toilets alone, making them the most common reason to call a tradie.
Meanwhile, burst pipes and power failures round out the top three.
RACV Head of Trades Kieran Davies says regular home maintenance can help minimise call-outs by recommended prompt, professional assistance in emergencies to prevent situations getting worse.
“A blocked toilet, pipe or drain prevents smooth water flow, which can cause overflow or back up into the nearest outlet and obviously, this is not something you want or are able to tackle yourself,” he said.
“Our specialists can assess the situation and fix most blockages on the spot with hand tools. If cameras and waterjets are required, they can provide a quote.”
RACV’s top 10 emergency trade callouts
- Blocked pipes or toilets
- Burst pipes
- Power failures
- Broken heating/cooling systems
- Burst taps or showerheads
- Broken hot water systems
- Internal leaks
- Lockouts
- Broken garage doors
- Gas leaks
However, employing some basic tricks and tips can help keep tradie call outs away, with RACV encouraging homeowners to familiarise themselves with preventive measures and troubleshooting for the most common household issue.
When it comes to blocked drains –never flush things like tissues, paper towels, wet wipes, tampons or menstrual products, nappies, dishcloths or sponges, ear cleaners or cotton pads, dental floss or hair.
Meanwhile, power failures can be prevented by not overloading power outlets, taking extra when using electrical devices around wet areas, and knowing how to switch back on circuit boards should you trip a switch.
For those akin to locking themselves out, giving a family member or neighbour a spare set of keys can prevent the need to ring a locksmith.
Those with problematic pipework can try insulating them to prevent bursts.
“While some issues can be prevented with routine care, others occur unexpectedly and having emergency contacts like RACV Emergency Home Assist can help address these situations promptly, minimising damage and ensuring safety,” Mr Davies said.
